On one hand, Brett Young’s debut album holds enough hooks to stock a bait-and-tackle shop—from the funky syncopation and rap-informed vocal phrasing of “Makin’ Me Say” to the stomping chorus on “Close Enough” that could have fallen off the back of a classic-rock delivery truck. At the same time, he shows a striking subtlety on tunes like the spare, emotionally unguarded piano ballad “Mercy” and the tender, light-footed “In Case You Didn’t Know.” Early in his career, he’s already mastered working both sides of the fence.
